Creators of Our Time
Ousmane – The Alchemist of Gorée’s Sands
Working from his open-air studio overlooking the Atlantic on Gorée Island, Ousmane has spent decades mastering the ancestral art of sand painting. Rejecting artificial pigments, he composes his intricate visual narratives using exactly seven distinct varieties of raw, un-dyed sand sourced from different regions across Senegal—ranging from the deep volcanic blacks of the island to the warm ochres of the desert. With a precise, meditative gesture, he layers each grain onto a natural plant-based adhesive, transforming the shifting soil of the continent into permanent, textured masterpieces that capture the timeless soul of Senegalese life
Musa, Master Artisan Painter
Born and raised on the historic island of Gorée, Senegal, Musa is a celebrated figure in the local art scene. His career spans over four decades, during which he has dedicated himself to capturing the vibrant spirit of African life through color and texture. While maintaining a profound respect for traditional techniques, Musa is known for his signature style of layered, textural abstraction, blending natural pigments with modern acrylics. His sun-dappled studio is a cultural hub, serving as both his creative sanctuary and a space for mentoring the next generation of West African artisans. Musa’s work has been exhibited across the continent, bridging contemporary art with the ancient craft traditions of his heritage.
The Visionary Thought
Matter is not an inert canvas; it carries within it the memory of the soil and the breath of those who worked it before us.
